First of all, I don’t consider myself to be a religious composer as I have written only 3 religious works among over 80 compositions.

My view on religions in general is that : one should not necessarily accept or deny religions as a presenting boxed package which have been inherited to us from the past. This package is usually made up of many things which include traditions, man made interpretations etc.

Rather than accepting a full package as a closed box with all its mixture of beauty, tradition and procession and at times contradictions, I like to pick only the most beautiful elements of  it (which are by no means little), and research and develop them as best as I can.

In this light, Emam Ali has the most attractive personality who possessed all of the many  uplifting and most beautiful qualities in a man, simultaneously.

The manifestation of these qualities in the highest degree , make him a very special personality for me. Qualities such as his kindness, forgiveness, modesty, his sacrificing nature, in control of his ego as to distancing himself from the love of  the power and wealth, in simple living, in his love and care for others, his absolute fairness, his endless wisdom and knowledge, intellect, his spirituality and his passionate love of God and much more.

I shall write shortly about the musical construction of this work.

These are part of music for the TV serial which was made up of 10 episodes and directed by Akbar Khajuyee in the year 1372 /1994.

The 10 episodes were made up of different stories based on Saadi’s Golestan and Rumi’s Masnavi, set in an atmosphere of old Persia with uplifting stories and spiritual connotations.

The music was a total of 62 minutes which were made up of pieces in order to suite the different emotional moments and the story lines in each episode. Therefore they varied from pieces for solo instruments to a fuller mixture of orchestral sounds. The instrumentation contained Persian traditional instruments such as santur, kamanche and daf as well as strings, clarinet, horns and percussion.

I always like to think that with music for film, the music (apart from the very effective moments), has to be listenable and enjoyable as a musical experience in its own right as well as serving its emotional and rhythmic needs of the picture that it is associated with.
